About Video Poker

At first glance video poker appears indistinguishable from online casino slots. However, the slots do not give you the player a discard option, and with it the opportunity to manipulate chance. After dropping your money in the machine (or digitally transferring it, as it were) all similarities to slots disappear. Five cards appear on the screen, and it is up to you, through a single round of strategic discards, to forge for yourself a winning hand. This is typically accomplished through the use of five “hold” buttons on the screen, one button corresponding to each card dealt. Simply tell the game which cards are keepers and press “deal” to see the replacements and the outcome of your game.

Precisely three elements constitute a game of video poker, the player, their strategy, and their luck. As with any game mediated by machine, the type of cards dealt every hand are determined by the computer’s random number generator. The potential combinations with this system are identical to those that could be dealt by a human being and a standard deck of cards. Thus the odds of drawing a particular hand without discarding are also the same. Knowing this, it becomes clear that the key to winning is in the discard. An optimal strategy will change depending on the particular rules of the video poker interface at which you sit. You will want to aim for different combinations in a game like Aces & Faces than you would in, say, Double Joker Poker.

Most games of video poker allow the player to value their games at $.25, $.50, $1, or $5, with the betting ranked from 1x - 5x the value you have chosen. For example, in a $1 game you can bet $1, $2, $3, $4, or $5 on your hand. If you win you will be rewarded according to the game’s particular payout schedule. This can change depending on which iteration of video poker you have chosen to play, the hand you’ve drawn, and how much you staked. Some games will rank hands in an untraditional manner, or provide unusually high pay outs for a specific card combination. In principle each credit the machine pays for a winning hand will be equal to the amount wagered that round, i.e. a $1 stake will put the value of each credit at $1. To cash in your credits and finish your session simply press the button labeled “collect”.

Online Video Poker

From pub to Casino and now online, video poker remains a permanent favorite of the gambling world. Like slots, video poker involves dropping your ducats into a machine for a chance to take the payoff. Unlike slots, video poker is not entirely a game of chance, with the player choosing in every hand which cards to keep and which to toss in the can. Given some experience, strategy, and luck, it is not unrealistic for the seasoned video poker player to harbor positive expectations of success.
